The parable, decoded.

Everything Oil & Lamp Global teaches grows from Matthew 25:1–13. Here is the parable in plain language, the symbols explained, and 14 scriptures that anchor a life of readiness — with reflections and action steps you can take today.

Matthew 25:1–13 — Simple Reading

Ten lamps. Five wise. One door.

Jesus said the kingdom of heaven would be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise and carried extra oil in their vessels. Five were foolish and brought only the oil already in their lamps.

The bridegroom was delayed. They all grew drowsy and slept. At midnight a cry was heard: Behold, the bridegroom! Go out to meet him. The wise trimmed their lamps and entered the wedding. The foolish ran to buy oil — but when they returned, the door was shut.

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." — Matthew 25:13

01
Matthew 25:1–13

The Ten Virgins

"Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom… Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour."
Explanation

Ten waited. Five were wise — they carried extra oil. Five were foolish — they had lamps but no reserves. When the midnight cry came, only the ready entered the wedding.

Practical application

A lamp without oil is religion without relationship. Build your inner life with Christ daily — not just for the moment, but for the wait.

Reflect
  • Is my lamp burning today on borrowed oil, or my own walk with God?
  • What would happen if Christ returned tonight?
Action steps
  • Take the Readiness Scorecard.
  • Begin one private habit you can sustain for 30 days.
02
Matthew 24:42–44

Watch Therefore

"Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come… Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh."
Explanation

Readiness is a posture, not a project. Jesus links watchfulness to the unknown hour.

Practical application

Live each day as if today could be the day — and plan as if tomorrow still belongs to obedience.

Reflect
  • What in my schedule assumes Jesus is far off?
Action steps
  • End each evening with one minute of self-examination.
03
Luke 21:34–36

Watch and Pray

"Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares… Watch ye therefore, and pray always."
Explanation

Three things deaden a heart: indulgence, intoxication, and anxiety. The remedy is constant prayer.

Practical application

Guard what you consume, celebrate, and worry about. Pray more than you scroll.

Reflect
  • Which of the three — indulgence, intoxication, or anxiety — is heaviest on me?
Action steps
  • Set a daily prayer alarm at the heaviest hour of your day.
04
1 Thessalonians 5:1–11

Children of Light

"Ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light… let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober."
Explanation

Believers are not surprised by Christ's return because we live in His light. Sleep and sobriety here are spiritual, not physical.

Practical application

Walk in the light: confess quickly, live transparently, refuse spiritual dullness.

Reflect
  • Where am I dulling my spiritual senses?
Action steps
  • Confess one hidden thing to God — and to a trusted believer.
05
Revelation 3:15–22

The Lukewarm Warning

"I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot… because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."
Explanation

Lukewarm faith repulses Christ more than open coldness. It assumes wealth and feels nothing.

Practical application

Ask Jesus for fire. Buy gold tried in the fire — character, not comfort.

Reflect
  • What have I become comfortable with that should disturb me?
Action steps
  • Fast one meal this week and pray for renewed fire.
06
Romans 12:1–2

Do Not Conform

"Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Explanation

Readiness is renewed thinking. The world disciples us through media and rhythm; God disciples us through truth.

Practical application

Audit your inputs. Whoever is forming your imagination is forming your future.

Reflect
  • What are my top three inputs each day — and what are they shaping?
Action steps
  • Remove one input that pulls you from Christ; add one that draws you near.
07
Galatians 5:22–23

Fruit of the Spirit

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Explanation

Oil is invisible until it bears fruit. The Spirit-filled life is recognized by character, not just claims.

Practical application

Measure spiritual growth by the fruit you carry into hard moments, not loud moments.

Reflect
  • Which fruit is most lacking in me right now?
Action steps
  • Ask the Holy Spirit daily this week for that one fruit.
08
Ephesians 6:10–18

The Armor of God

"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil… praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit."
Explanation

Readiness is also warfare. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer keep our lamps from being snuffed by the enemy.

Practical application

Suit up every morning. Don't fight today's battles in yesterday's armor.

Reflect
  • Which piece of armor have I left off lately?
Action steps
  • Pray Ephesians 6 over yourself and your household each morning.
09
John 15:1–8

Abiding in Christ

"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
Explanation

Oil flows from connection, not effort. Abiding is the source of every wise virgin's reserves.

Practical application

Stay attached. Quiet time isn't an obligation — it's lifeline sap from the Vine.

Reflect
  • What does abiding actually look like in my Tuesday?
Action steps
  • Schedule a fixed daily window with Christ — same time, same place.
10
Hebrews 10:24–25

Fellowship & Encouragement

"Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
Explanation

The closer Christ's return, the more we need each other. Isolation is the enemy of readiness.

Practical application

Belong to a local church. Walk closely with two or three who will sharpen you.

Reflect
  • Who knows me well enough to call out my drifting?
Action steps
  • Text one believer today to meet, pray, or check in this week.
11
James 1:22

Be Doers of the Word

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
Explanation

Hearing without doing breeds self-deception. The foolish virgins knew the parable too.

Practical application

Obey the last thing God said before asking Him to speak again.

Reflect
  • What did God ask me to do this week that I haven't done?
Action steps
  • Write down one obedience step and complete it within 24 hours.
12
2 Timothy 3:1–5

Difficult Times

"In the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud… having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof."
Explanation

Paul names the cultural climate of the end: self-love, greed, pride, religion without power. Diagnosis, not despair.

Practical application

Refuse the cultural defaults. Live a counter-formation life rooted in the Spirit's power.

Reflect
  • Which trait on this list quietly lives in me?
Action steps
  • Repent specifically. Replace with a Spirit-formed opposite.
13
Matthew 28:18–20

The Great Commission

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you."
Explanation

Readiness is missional. The wise virgins are sent — not to hoard the oil, but to help others find Christ before the door shuts.

Practical application

Treat every relationship as a discipleship doorway.

Reflect
  • Who in my life still needs to meet Jesus?
Action steps
  • Pray for and reach out to one person this week with the gospel.
14
2 Peter 3:9

He Is Patient

"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
Explanation

The delay is mercy. Every extra day is rescue, not absence.

Practical application

Use the delay the way God uses it — to call yourself and others to repentance.

Reflect
  • Am I using this delay for myself, or for the lost?
Action steps
  • Thank God for His patience. Pray for someone far from Him by name.
